Can I Start The Rosary On The Centerpiece?

Hi,
My Mother taught me the rosary and the way she thought me is quite different from any way I've ever seen it on the internet or in books.

The way she taught me is to first make the sign of the cross while holding the centerpiece and then go straight into the decades. My Great Grandmother (my Mother's Grandmother) and my Nana (my Father's Mother) also say it this way. Once I asked my Nana what the first five beads were for and she said they were only used at Mass.

I know the method of praying with the apostles creed which this site and a lot of other ones teaches, but I like the way I was thought because it's kind of special to me.

I'm from Ireland, so maybe this is an Irish custom? I used to think it was maybe a family custom but, both my Father's family and my Mother's pray it that way.

I also know people who use the first five beads on the rosary, but don't say the creed. Are these acceptable methods of praying the rosary? Thank you.

Yes, As The Rosary Is A Private Devotion
by: The Rosary Team

Unlike the Mass that has a set of rubrics and norms, the Rosary is a private devotion and as such there is no right or wrong way of praying it. In America, the way we pray the Rosary differs from area to area but the way that it is taught on this site is the most common way it is prayed and it is in accord with the way the Confraternity of the Most Holy Rosary who has been entrusted with spreading devotion to the Rosary by the Holy See over 500 years ago and run by the Dominican Fathers. The method we teach with the addition of the St. Michael Prayer and the Prayer from the Breviary is taught here on their website as the "common method of praying the Rosary"

Fourth Rosary Promise
The rosary will make virtue and good works flourish, and will obtain for souls the most abundant divine mercies. It will draw the hearts of men from the love of the world and its vanities, and will lift them to the desire of eternal things. Oh, that souls would sanctify themselves by this means.
